Homer Simpson has been a part of American culture for the last 23 years. We've watched him on television. He starred in a movie. We've bought Homer Simpson dolls, T-shirts and underwear. We say "Doh!" when we do or say something stupid. So, just who is Homer Simpson, besides the head of our favorite animated household?
According to his biography on IMDb.com, Homer was born on May 12, 1956 to Abraham and Mona Simpson. His mother ran away in the mid-60's, so Homer was raised by his father. Homer met Marge in 1974, and they married in 1981 after Marge became pregnant with Bart. At the time, Homer worked at a miniature golf course. He attempted to get a job at the nuclear power plant in Springfield, but was unsuccessful. He didn't get his job at the power plant until after Lisa was born in 1983. His third child, Maggie, was born in the late 80's.
Homer has had several other jobs in addition to working at the miniature golf course and the nuclear power plant. Before Lisa was born, Homer left home to look for a job to support his family, and wound up working at a taco stand. Around 1985, Homer was lead singer and songwriter for the Be Sharps, a Grammy-winning barbershop quartet. Prior to Maggie's birth, Homer had quit working at the nuclear power plant and was pursuing his dream job of pin monkey at a bowling alley. Unfortunately, once Marge became pregnant with Maggie, Homer was forced to return to the power plant in order to support his family.
When The Simpsons first aired in 1989, Homer was 34 years old. Now, 23 years later, Homer has aged only 4 years, and is currently listed as 38. As the writers of The Simpsons got older day, Homer seemed to act older as well, which is the reason they changed his age.
When Homer is not at work, he can often be found at Moe's Tavern. He often aggravates Marge, the love of his life. He tolerates Marge's sisters, and is constantly at odds with his neighbor Ned Flanders. He loves donuts, Duff's beer and his children, though not necessarily in that order.
Homer Simpson has been voiced by Dan Castellaneta since the show began in 1989.
